The County Government of Machakos has taken a major step toward improving living conditions in informal settlements following the official handover of the final County Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy.
The strategy was formally received by the CECM for Lands, Housing, Urban Development and Roads, Hon. Nathaniel Nganga, from the national team under the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project Phase II (KISIP 2) institutional capacity building component. The delegation was led by Planners Cornell Aketch, Gladys Juma, and Wanjiru Jerioth.
Developed to address Machakos County’s unique challenges and opportunities, the strategy focuses on improving existing informal settlements while also preventing the emergence of new ones. It is set to be integrated into the next County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), ensuring that slum upgrading and prevention remain a central pillar in the county’s long-term development agenda.
Also present during the handover were the Chief Officer for Economic Planning, Mr. Lawrence Maingi, Municipal Managers, and technical officers who contributed to the development of the strategy and will play a key role in its implementation.
The initiative reinforces the County Government’s commitment to inclusive urban development, improved living conditions, and sustainable planning for all residents of Machakos County.
