Katwanyaa Falcons FC have once again proven why they are the team to beat after successfully defending their title at the Governor Wavinya Cup third edition. The defending champions edged out Scottlanders FC 3–1 in a tense penalty shootout after the grand final ended in a goalless draw at the end of regulation time.
With the victory, Katwanyaa Falcons FC walked away with Ksh. 1,000,000, while runners-up Scottlanders FC pocketed Ksh. 500,000, sealing a back-to-back triumph marked by composure, resilience, and championship mentality.
In the women’s category, Jua Kali Queens emerged victorious after a hard-fought final against Talanta Queens. Representing Machakos Town Sub-County, Jua Kali Queens secured the win through a decisive strike by Mercy Kamwilwa in the 48th minute. The champions took home Ksh. 1,000,000, while Talanta Queens from Kalama Sub-County settled for Ksh. 500,000.
This year’s tournament was held under the theme “Tuimarishe Mazingira, Tucheze Ball,” blending sporting excellence with environmental consciousness and community responsibility.
The Governor Wavinya Cup continues to grow in size and impact. While the first and second editions attracted 640 teams each with 12,800 footballers per edition, this year’s tournament recorded increased participation, drawing 650 teams and a total of 14,300 players. The competition has become a powerful platform for community engagement and youth empowerment across Machakos County.
Beyond sports, Governor Wavinya Ndeti noted that the initiative plays a critical role in keeping young people engaged, productive, and safe from social vices such as substance abuse and teenage pregnancies. Several success stories have emerged from the tournament, including Felix Mwendwa, who earned an opportunity to showcase his talent in Spain. A number of girls have also progressed to the Harambee Starlets Under-17 team, while one player joined Police Bullets and is currently undergoing police training at Kiganjo.
The grand finale was graced by Wiper Patriotic Front Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who commended Governor Wavinya Ndeti for organizing a well-structured and impactful tournament for the youth. He also encouraged young people to register as voters to ensure their voices are heard in the next general elections.
With champions crowned and lives transformed, the Governor Wavinya Cup continues to position Machakos County as a hub of sporting excellence, youth empowerment, and opportunity creation.
