The County Government of Machakos, through the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock and Co-operative Development, has transitioned from surveillance to active field intervention in the fight against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) following a comprehensive two-day technical training for veterinary and data personnel.
Under the Directorate of Veterinary Services and supported by the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), frontline officers have been equipped with skills to utilize the Mifugo360 App and the E-Voucher Vaccination System—innovative digital tools designed to make the upcoming vaccination campaign data-driven, traceable, and highly efficient. These technologies allow livestock to be registered, tracked, and monitored in real time, improving disease surveillance, transparency, and accountability in animal health management.
Leveraging findings from a recent zero-surveillance exercise conducted across all 40 wards, the initiative marks a significant shift from traditional vaccination approaches toward modern, technology-enabled livestock management. Digital systems such as the e-voucher model enable better coordination among veterinary teams while ensuring that every vaccine administered is recorded and monitored.
This digital transformation reinforces the vision of H.E. Governor Wavinya Ndeti under the “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni” agenda by safeguarding livestock health, improving productivity, and protecting farmers from disease-related losses. Ultimately, the initiative strengthens food security, enhances livestock value chains, and supports sustainable household incomes across Machakos County.
