Governor Wavinya Ndeti presided over the launch of the 3rd Edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup at Kisooni Catholic Church Grounds, Mumbuni North.
This year’s tournament has taken an even greater stride, bringing together 650 teams from all 40 wards of Machakos County under the powerful theme: “Nurturing Talent, Greening Our Future & Empowering Generations.”
The Governor Wavinya Cup has grown to become more than just a football competition. It is a movement that empowers the youth, scouts and nurtures sporting talent, raises awareness on mental health, and champions environmental conservation. Over the years, the Cup has produced remarkable success stories, including Mary Nthambi, now shining in the Women’s Premier League, and Felix Mwendwa, who is currently in Spain undergoing scouting opportunities.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Wavinya reaffirmed her commitment to investing in the potential of young people and positioning Machakos as the true home of talent. She urged communities to continue supporting youth initiatives, noting that sports remain a critical pathway to personal growth, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
The Governor extended her gratitude to key partners whose support has kept the tournament thriving, among them the Department of Youth & Sports, FKF President Hussein Mohammed, FKF Machakos Branch Chairman Abdi Noor, and Sofapaka FC CEO Herbert Kunga.
This year’s edition promises thrilling matches, talent discovery, and community involvement through activities such as tree planting and mental health sensitization sessions. The inclusion of both men’s and women’s teams reaffirms Machakos County’s commitment to inclusivity in sports.
As the Governor concluded, the rallying call was clear:
“Vijana tusakate dimba, wasichana tucheze ball, tusibebe ball!”
