The County Government of Machakos, through the Department of Water, Irrigation, Sanitation, Environment and Climate Change, in partnership with the Eastern Community Development Program working with ChildFund, commemorated World Water Day at Kamuthini Primary School in Kalama Sub-County.
The event was presided over by Mr. Boniface Kamende, Director of Water and Irrigation, representing the CECM for Water and Irrigation, Hon. Onesmus Kuyu.
This year’s theme, “Water and Gender,” highlighted the critical role of safe water and sanitation in promoting gender equality and safeguarding human rights. Discussions during the event emphasized that women and girls continue to bear a disproportionate burden in water access and sanitation responsibilities, while remaining underrepresented in water governance and decision-making processes.
Participants underscored the importance of addressing these disparities in order to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.
The Department reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to clean and safe water through climate-responsive interventions such as environmental conservation, efficient water use, rainwater harvesting, wetland conservation, and wastewater reuse.
The event brought together key stakeholders including the Water Resources Authority (WRA), National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), and representatives from the Ministries of Education and Health, reinforcing a collaborative approach toward sustainable water resource management and improved community livelihoods.
