Machakos Commemorates International Day of Forests with Large-Scale Tree Planting and Community Empowerment Activities

The International Day of Forests (IDF) in Machakos County was commemorated at Matetani Community Forest in Kangundo Sub-County under the theme “Forests and Economies.” The event brought together government officials, development partners, and local communities in a coordinated effort to promote forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

The ceremony was led by the Chief Officer for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Simeon Kitheka, alongside County Forest Conservator Madam Milcah Mutua and Miss Environment Kenya 2026, Regina Syombua.

Key stakeholders in attendance included the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Youth Service Department (YSD), Kenya Women Finance Trust (KWFT), NGAO, and members of the local community.

A total of 12,100 tree and fruit seedlings were planted across Matetani Community Forest, Kilimambogo Teachers College, Uuni Forest, and Iveti Forest. Of these, 2,000 were fruit trees, aimed at supporting livelihoods and enhancing food security for surrounding communities.

The Chief Officer emphasized the importance of community participation in forest conservation, noting that forest-based enterprises such as beekeeping and agroforestry can significantly improve household incomes while protecting natural ecosystems.

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and TARDA also conducted training sessions on grafting and beekeeping, equipping community members with practical skills to support sustainable forest use and economic empowerment.

Stakeholders praised the initiative, highlighting the vital role forests play in supporting economies, sustaining livelihoods, and driving long-term sustainable development.
