In a bid to empower the youth of Machakos County, Governor Wavinya Ndeti launched the “Governor Wavinya Cup” football tournament in 2023 for both men and Ladies.
Now in its third edition, the tournament has continued to grow, nurturing talent and providing a vibrant platform for young people to showcase their immense potential.
The inaugural edition in 2023 saw Kaluluini FC from Yatta Sub-County and Ikalaasa from Mwala Sub-County crowned overall champions, each walking away with a grand prize of KSh 1 million.
In the 2024 second edition, Katwanyaa Falcons FC from Matungulu Sub-County and Athi River Queens from Mavoko Sub-County replicated this feat, each also clinching KSh 1 million after emerging victorious in the grand finale.
Each of the first two editions attracted 640 teams, bringing together 12,800 participants, from the ward level all the way to the county final.
The story of the Governor Wavinya Cup would not be complete without acknowledging the unrivaled fanbase behind the participating teams. From grassroots stages to the grand finals, supporters have consistently brought unmatched energy. During both finals, the iconic Kenyatta Stadium was filled to capacity, an unmistakable testament to the deep love for football in Machakos County.
The ongoing third edition has grown even bigger, featuring 650 teams and an impressive 14,300 players. This weekend marks the highly anticipated Sub-County face-off in what has been dubbed the “Super 9” competition, where Sub-County Supremos from each Sub-County will battle for supremacy.
The winners of this Super 9 showdown will advance to the grand finale, scheduled for 13th December 2025.
