This morning in Machakos I hosted the European Union Ambassador to Kenya, His Excellency Simon Mordue, and the Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Cooperation, Royal Danish Embassy Mr Henrick Larsen, together with their teams.
The delegation had visited our county to officially launch the national AgriBiz programme supported by both the European Union and the Danish Royal Embassy.
The decision to launch this national programme in Machakos stems from the realisation that, as a county, we have made significant progress in addressing food security, and succeeding in kicking poverty out of our midst in the last few years beginning 2013.
Our projects at the Machakos Farmers Training Centre (FCT), including chicken rearing, fish farming, vegetable farming, dairy farming and bee keeping among others make us a key partner. The choice of Machakos county as an incubation centre for the programme is therefore not misplaced.
Over the years we have built a legacy of promoting and supporting local farmers through providing free tractors to plough their land and free seeds as well as fertilizers.
Working together with these two partners, we will, in the coming days, increase production of such agricultural products such as macadamia, mangoes and onions, and be able to export processed goods to the European market.
This is a “cool” project focusing mainly on young people and women. It will avail funds to these people so that they can invest in agricultural production.
We are expanding our county coffee sector and setting up a Machakos milk plant. I therefore urge young people to take advantage of these funds, register and apply for the money and invest it in modern farming.
